It’s only been six months since the Running Lane National Cross Country Championships hosted what became the national best time of all time at 5,000 meters Jenna Hutchins broke 16 minutes for the first time in girls high school cross country.
Fast forward to June, though, and maybe we’ll be shooting the same story soon enough.
With weeks leading up to the registration deadline for the inaugural RunningLane Track Championships, taking place just outside of Huntsville, Alabama on June 11-12, things are starting to heat up.
Once again, the country’s best athletes will battle it out for another national record.
Right now, a total of five athletes who competed in the 3,200m championship race have broken the elusive 9-minute barrier in their indoor or outdoor season, and with more time until race day, that number could rise.
Gatorade National Cross Country Player of the Year Parker Wolf will make the trip from Cherry Creek, Colorado while state cross-country champions like Catawba Ridge’s Sam RichMary Persons Justin WachtelMarietta’s (GA) Kamari Miller and East Central Christian Balder are also on board.
We couldn’t forget those of Satellite (FL) either Gabriel MontaguNashville Martin Luther Kings (TN) miles allyGreen Mountain (CO) Grahm Tuohy-Gaydos and Duncanville (TX) Martin Chavezas all four were principal members of their state’s top runners that fall.
Including Wolfe in the 3,200m has the potential to earn some serious weight. The North Carolina signee could follow Germany’s Fernandez’s 13-year record the distance if he beats a time of 8:34.23.
Recently, Wolfe said his goal is to break 8:40.
In the boys’ mile, we might also see an athlete chasing at least the Sub-4.
In March, at the Texas Distance Festival, Ben Shearer of the Woodlands Christians offered that he probably was Shoot for this historical scale before his season ends.
Shearer will compete for his first national-level championship against some of the best talent in the country including Harrisons (GA) Sully SheltonEastsides (SC) Spain Vaughanand Ally, Montague and Rich.
In the 800m, South Carolina native Saxon Brown will put his 1:53.71 PR in hopes of cutting it completely.
Then there is the female contingent.
A who’s who of distance runners will compete the mile including Fort Wayne Carroll’s (IN) Zoe DuffusKaty Cinco Ranch (TX) Heidi NieselsonBirmingham Seaholms (MI) Audrey Dadamio and Eighth Grade Phenomenon Sadie Engelhardt from California.
All four athletes have broken in the 1,600m and 4:50m in what was an incredible year for a girl nationwide.
In the 3,200m, Dadamio will try to get the championship double and will face Cambridge Christian (FL). Caroline LehmannOakwoods (OH) Grace HartmanPetoskeys (MI) Emma Squires and Garden State Track Club (NJ) Miranda Lorsbach.
