The Oregon Ducks closed out the first day of the early signing phase with a bang, adding several signings highlighted by two five-star prospects.
It was a great day for Dan Lanning and his coaching staff.
Oregon Recruiting Class of 2023 is held No. 7 nationally and flirts with the best finish in program history.
Here’s a look at the position grades for the class*:
*Subject to change due to new commitments/cancellations and will be updated
Quarterback: B
4-Star QB Austin Novosad (Dripping Springs; Texas)
It’s impossible not to include the loss of five-star quarterback Dante Moore in this note.
Put simply, his departure was one of the biggest Pac-12 recruitment flips in modern history.
Still, Oregon recovered well.
Austin Novosad, who busted out of Baylor on day one of the early signing phase, is the nation’s No. 9 quarterback and has been heavily pursued by Notre Dame, Ohio State, Texas A&M and others over the summer.
You couldn’t turn him over.
Oregon made it with very little time on the clock.
It was an impressive setback for the Ducks.
Running back: A
4-Star RB Dante Dowdell (Picayune; Mississippi)
4-Star RB Jayden Limar (Lake Stevens; Washington)
Oregon identified Dante Dowdell early and held on despite late pushes from multiple SEC and ACC programs.
Since his signing, the bloody Mississippi defender has seen his stocks skyrocket as he is now ranked among the top 10 defenders nationally and ranked #6 of 247Sports.
Pulling that kind of talent out of the heart of SEC Country is a huge accomplishment.
On day one of the early signing phase, Oregon flipped Notre Dame’s Jayden Limar.
The 5-foot-11, 180-pound speed back is the perfect pairing with Dowdell, something the staff hammered home at the Northwest playmaker in their late recruiting surge.
This is a star duo.
Wide Receiver: A
5-Star WR Jurrion Dickey (Menlo-Atherton; California)
4-Star WR Ashton Cozart (Marcus; Texas)
Jurrion Dickey is the second-biggest wide receiver in the nation and one of the top playmakers in the country.
The five-star passcatcher is a big “win,” and his signing — albeit belated — was probably a very welcome feat for Oregon staff.
Under Armor All-American pick Ashton Cozart is raw but full of potential.
The fast 6-foot-3 1/2, 193-pound pass catcher turned from Oklahoma when he chose the Ducks in May and never wavered.
Boh recruits could develop into “Sunday players”.
Tight end: A-
4 Star WR/TE Kenyon Sadiq (Skyline; Idaho)
After missing out on former Central Catholic-turned-IMG Academy star Riley Williams (Miami Hurricanes), Oregon turned around and secured the signing of Kenyon Sadiq.
That’s not a consolation prize.
Sadiq is a dynamic 6-foot-3, 220-pound playmaker who is not only rated the No. 4 athlete in the nation but could very well be the top contender in the Northwest.
He has also been very vocal about his trust and respect for the staff.
High character and elite talent is a recipe for a big recruit win.
Offensive line: C+
4-star JC OL George Silva (Fullerton College; California)
4 Star Hotel OL Iapanii Laloulu (Farrington, Hawaii)
3 Star Hotel OL Lipe Moala (Mater Dei; California)
3* OL Gernorris Wilson (Lakeland; Florida)
3* OL Bryce Boulton (Palm Desert; California)
I like this group very much.
The bottom note is more about the “process” than the result.
And it’s hard to argue when you look at the numbers.
Oregon went 0-for-23 with offered high school offensive tackles, according to 247Sports.
While the Ducks strayed from some of these players in the transition from Mario Cristobal to Dan Lanning, it still underscores the level of “miss” in this class.
The lone true tackle in the group is very solid.
Georgia Silva is the nation’s No. 1 junior college offensive tackle and should provide immediate depth, if not a good starter.
Similarly, the Ducks only landed one of the top 18 internal offensive linemen they offered, Under Armor All-American Iapanai Laloulu.
The rest of the group has a lot of size and frankly real potential, especially given Adrian Klemm’s coaching skills.
But Oregon’s “hit rate” with prospects for high school blue-chip offensive lines needs to improve in the 2024 cycle.
And it almost certainly will.
Remember: Those staffers signed five-star offensive tackle Josh Conerly Jr. less than a year ago.
Notably, Oregon has significantly strengthened its offensive line in the transfer portal with Ajani Cornelius (Rhode Island) and Junior Angilau (Texas), although they are not accounted for here.
Line of Defence: A
5* EDGE Matayo Uiagalelei (St. John Bosco; California)
4 Star Hotel DL A’mauri Washington (Chandler; Arizona)
4* DL Terrance Green (Cy Woods, Texas)
4-Star DL Johnny Bowens (Judson; Texas)
3 Star Hotel DL My’Keil Gardner (Liberty; Arizona)
3 stars DL Tevita Pome’e (Layton Christian Academy; Utah)
Entering the early signing phase, this group already had plenty of depth with their fair share of star power.
The addition of Matayo Uiagalelei, the nation’s No. 2 edge rusher, put it over the top.
The 6-foot-5, 265-pound Edge is a superb athlete who, given his movements and soft hands, could very well be a five-star tight end.
He is the jewel in his class and is helping Oregon build a major in-road program for the St. John Bosco National Championship.
Its value cannot be overestimated.
Arizona product Amauri Washington brings Eugene a rare size (6-4, 295 pounds) and fills a significant need.
He chose Oregon over offers from Auburn, Florida, Florida State, LSU, Michigan, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, USC and many others.
Terrance Green (6-5, 265) and Johnny Bowens (6-3, 265) are both solid four-star Texas defensemen who have had offers from everywhere.
My’Keil Gardner (6-2, 275) and Tevita Pome’e (6-3, 315) also add some bulk.
Oregon clearly wanted to address their space on the defensive line and do so with a collection of talented players who could make a big difference in the years to come.
The 2012 class featured Arik Armstead (Star), DeForest Buckner (Star) and Alex Balducci (perennial starter), so becoming the best defensive line class in program history will be a challenge, but this is one great group.
Defender: B-
4* EDGE Blake Purchase (Cherry Creek, Colorado)
4 Star Hotel EDGE Teitum Tuioti (Sheldon; Oregon)
3-Star LB Jerry Mixon (Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep; California)
3* EDGE Jaeden Moore (Central Valley Christian; California)
Colorado No. 1 Blake Purchase is the group’s headliner, but he didn’t sign Wednesday and there are reports Deion Sanders is trying to bring him to Colorado.
It’s worth watching closely, and the grade will go up a tad as he inks his National Letter of Intent.
The cousin of Cincinnati Behgals star running back Joe Mixon, Jerry Mixon is a talented, versatile backer who also played running back in high school.
Teitum Tuiotii, the son of Oregon defensive line coach Tony Tuioti, is Oregon State’s top contender and had a stellar senior season.
The 6-foot-3, 220-pound edge rusher is rated four stars 247 sports and certainly looked good for Sheldon this fall.
Jaeden Moore is a fascinating development project.
The 6-foot-4, 230-pound defenseman has a nice frame and chose the Ducks over Arizona, Boise State, Cal, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Oregon State and others.
Defender: A
Peyton Bowen (Guyer; Texas) 5 stars
4-Star CB Daylen Austin (Long Beach Poly; California)
4-Star CB Cole Martin (Basha; Arizona)
4 stars S Kodi Decambra (Bishop Gorman; Nevada)
4* S. Tyler Turner (Brennan; Texas)
3 Star CB Collin Gill (St. John’s; Washington DC)
What a wild exit!
Five-star safety Peyton Bowen turned but not signed his signing from Notre Dame to Oregon on Wednesday morning.
It’s something to monitor.
Oregon essentially traded four-star cornerback Caleb Presley (Washington) for four-star cornerback Daylen Austin (former LSU pledge).
That’s actually a win for the Ducks since Austin is the one Number 10 cornerback in the nation.
Cole Martin, the son of Oregon defense coach Demetrice Martin, garnered more than 30 scholarship offers during his recruiting, highlighted by Alabama, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Notre Dame, Stanford, Tennessee and many others.
Kodi Decambra is not only a talented player in his own right – one whose stock has risen over time – but also gives the Ducks an “in” at Bishop Gorman, a national power program.
Similarly, Tyler Turner has seen his stock rise recently and is helping build access roads into Texas.
Collin Gill was one of the first players signed on Wednesday and provides depth – with some advantages.
