To say that AJ Perez is honored to have the opportunity to play in the Les Schwab Bowl might be an understatement.
Perez, a prospective senior at Clackamas High School, puts a smile on his face when asked what this means to him to play in the high school all-star football game.
“It’s very honorable to play here,” said Perez, an athletic 6-foot-3, 180-pound receiver/defender for Team Willamette, after a team practice session Wednesday. “The legacy it had, 74 years, that’s a long time. A lot of good players were in this game. There are only about 50 players each year, so I’m really proud of myself to play this game. I’m really honored.”
That Les Schwab Bowl, which will be played at Linfield University in McMinnville on Saturday, also marks the beginning of a change for Perez. After spending his first three years of high school with Tigard, Perez transferred to Clackamas for his senior season.
“It’s a change, a change of scenery,” said Perez. “Meet new people, go out. I know some people over there. It’s cool. There are a lot of good coaches over there.”
Perez, a All-Three Rivers League Honorable Mention Pick at the recipient after his junior year, is also quick to point out that Tigard still holds a place in his heart.
“Of course I will miss all my Tigard people, friends and coaches over there,” he said. “I grew up with them, but I had to do what’s right for me.”
It’s also right for Perez to try to be the sole Clackamas representative on Saturday Les Schwab Bowl.
“It’s exciting to get the Clackamas name out there,” he said. “There are some guys over there who are under the radar and shouldn’t be, and I’m trying to get some looks for them too.”
He also wants to make an impression in Saturday’s game, the first game in which he will wear a black and red Cavaliers helmet.
“I want to go deep, get some touchdowns, make some big blocks and help get the running backs into the end zone,” Perez said with a smile, speaking about what he hopes to achieve in Saturday’s competition . “It’s a competitive thing — Team Willamette, Team Columbia, we’re all out here and we all want to win.”
Speaking of winning, Perez also anticipates a big senior season at Clackamas this fall.
“I’m really looking forward to it,” he said. “My quarterback, Blake Baker (All-Mt. Honorable Mention at the Hood Conference last year as a junior), he’s a guy. We’re definitely going to do some big things over there.”

Saturday’s event kicks off at 2:00 p.m. with a tailgating featuring Golden Valley Brewing, Stoller Family Wine and more. Doors open at 4 p.m., kick-off is at 6 p.m
