By the start of the 2023 recruitment cycle, the Oregon Ducks had built up a recent history of near misses along the defensive line.
Dan Lanning, Tosh Lupoi and the coaching staff quickly changed that reputation over the past year, securing signings from several top prospects.
The latest addition?
During Tuesday’s Under Armor All-America game on ESPN2, Cypress Ranch (Texas), four-star fullback Ashton Porter announced his commitment to Oregon to the state of Michigan.
The 6-foot-3, 255-pound defender is rated as the Nation No. 329 Overall View and Defender No. 39.
Porter expressed a strong affinity for Oregon in mid-December before a final visit to Eugene.
From then on, his involvement seemed like a mere formality—more a matter of “when” than “if.”
Here is what 247Sports had to say about Porter as an interested party:
“A schematized defender who offers a lot of pass rushing up due to the impressive take off and ability to redirect. Measured near 6-foot-3, 255 pounds in the spring before senior season. Notably, he clocked a 4.8-inch laser time in the 40-yard sprint that goes hand in hand with a flashing 7.3 in the three-pin drill. Shoots into the backcourt with a nice forward lean and plenty of momentum. Active hands allow him to break away from blockers and get home. As was a skillful spin move, which was on full display during Under Armor All-America Game Week. Successful from a four-point stance but also found success while standing on the sidelines during a senior campaign in which he collected 15 sacks. Should growth potential allow him to establish himself more as an inside player on Saturdays though and could fit in well as a 4i in an aggressive 3-4 front.Needs adjustment to life as a power five athlete but has what it takes to eventually making an impact at the next level up front.”
As a senior, the elite edge rusher recorded 63 tackles, 24 tackles for loss and 15 sacks.
Porter is the latest major recruiting win for Oregon among the seven frontline defenders this cycle.
He is joined by St. John Bosco (California), a five-star edge rusher Matayo UiagaleleiChandler (Arizona) Four-Star Fullback A’mauri WashingtonJudson (Texas) Four Star Fullback Johnny BowensCherry Creek (Colorado) four-star edge rusher Blake purchase, Cy Woods. (Texas) four-star defender terrace greenSheldon (Oregon) four-star edge rusher Teitum Tuioti and other.
Simply put, this group of defenders is arguably the deepest and most diverse Oregon has secured in a single class in program history.
Porter added this in a big way on national television.
