Cross Country: White Bear Boys win giant Roy Griak Invitational | Local

The White Bear Lake cross country boys put on a colossal performance on Saturday to win the 34th annual Roy Griak Invitational against strong teams from many states.

The Bears edged out defending champion Edina to finish first out of 50 teams in the Gold (Top) Division at the University of Minnesota’s Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights.

“This is the largest gathering in the country with teams from across the country. It’s like a state meeting on steroids,” bear trainer Dan said Kovacich. “We were forecast for 10th place.”

The top five teams were Bears 304, Edina 338, Frontier Academy (Colorado) 341, Dowling Catholic (Iowa) 377, and Cherry Creek (Colorado) 387. The next highest team from Minnesota was St. Paul Highland Park, a Bears section rival . in eighth place.

The Bears’ best finish to date was 10th place in 2011. Last year they had turned 30.

Her five points were Max Nelson in 22nd (16:33), Logan Tanttu in 41st (16:48), Trevor Locke in 48th (16:54), Isaac Maruyama in 81st (17:12) and Ernie Mattison in 112th place (17:27). ) among 570 runners. Behind them were Ben McLaughlin in 157th place (17:41) and Sam Verkerke in 182nd place (17:50).

“The boys ran in a tight pack today,” Kovacich said. “Our three to seven have really grown. We had a 51 second spread, one in five. Winning this type of competition, with almost 600 runners and no one in the top 10, is very rare.”

Not everyone was in top form, he said, but the group performance made up for it: “We had kids who were usually at the back of our pack.”

Highland Park’s Oliver Paleen was the individual winner in 15:46.

The Bears finish the regular season next Saturday at the Alexandria Invitational, followed by the Oct. 15 meeting of the Suburban East Conference.

“If we can continue to stay healthy,” Kocevich said, “who knows what this team can do. They are a special group of young men fighting for each other.”
