Denver, April 12, 2012: The Mountain States Office of the Anti-Defamation League has designated 45 schools from across Colorado as a No Place for Hate® after the schools spent a year working to create a just, safe, and respectful environment. Schools from Denver, Aurora, Boulder, Fort Collins, Nederland, Greeley, Cherry Creek, Colorado Springs, and Durango attended the April 11 Aurora naming ceremony.

It takes hard work to create an inclusive and respectful school community. “You just don’t open the window of your school and all the hate goes away,” said Manhattan Middle School principal Robyn Fernandez. “You have to be intentional and persistent in changing the culture of your school.” ADL honored Manhattan Middle School in Boulder and Pine Creek High School in Academy District 20 with the Positive impact! Recognition for her five-year commitment to the No Place for Hate® campaign.

Jamie Van Leeuwen, Senior Advisor and Director of Community Partnerships to Governor Hickenloooper, read a proclamation from the Governor declaring April 11, 2012 in Colorado as a “No Place for Hate® Day.”

Bruce Caughey, executive director of the Colorado Association of School Executives (CASE), shared personal stories of challenges he experienced growing up related to verbal abuse and bullying. He emphasized the importance of administrators, teachers and faculty taking the time to create a welcoming and safe environment on their campus.

Teachers, administrators and ADL volunteers gathered at the Aurora Public Schools Professional Learning Conference Center to celebrate achieving their goal of becoming a No Place for Hate®. ADL provided each school with a label banner to be prominently displayed.

The Mountain States Office of the Anti-Defamation League has offered schools the No Place for Hate® initiative since 2007. This year’s program reached 41,000 students across Colorado.
