Sadie Engelhardt enjoyed the big stage at Saturday’s Arcadia Invitational.
Running in front of one of the biggest crowds of her young career, the Ventura High freshman set state, national and world record performances that also left her with a sense of victory.
Engelhardt led a star-studded field all the way to win the girls’ invitation mile in 4:35.16 at Arcadia High School.
“I felt it,” said Engelhardt. “I’m happy to have won at such a big meeting. I usually come second or third at big meetings like this.
“It’s good to have the icing on the cake: getting the time I wanted and the win.”
Englehart’s milestones:
The time bettered its own national high school freshman record and broke the 42-year-old 15-year-olds and under age group record of 4:36.0 set by Gunvor Hilde of Norway in London Dominique Eisold’s international age records.
“It’s good that these bars exist,” Engelhardt said, “so I can work toward that.”
Engelhardt’s 1,600 meter time from the same race, released by Monday morning’s meeting, was 4:33.29.
That mark beats the California state record of 4:35.06 set last month by Mira Costa senior Dalia Frias and ties the 8-year national high school record originally set by Alexa Efraimson of Camas High at Washington State Championships 2014 was established.
“We had a number of high-level kids who came to this gathering at various events,” said Rich Gonzalez of PrepCalTrack.com. “They admitted afterwards how nervous they were when they saw the audience and the competition. But (Engelhardt) ate it up as a freshman.
“Nevertheless, she still shone. That speaks volumes for the poise and focus she has.”
The quality of the competition was so strong that three state records were broken in the race.
Chloe Foerster of Jesuit, Oregon, who finished second in 4:40.27, set the Oregon state record. Riley Stewart of Cherry Creek, Colorado, who finished fourth in 4:40.82, set Colorado’s state record.
Newbury Park senior Sam McDonnell, who finished third in 4:40.63, also surpassed Ventura County’s previous record.
“For the first lap…I just wanted to stay relaxed,” said Engelhardt. “For the second lap I wanted to drive as close to 1:08 as possible. So I was a bit slow there.
“I should go into my third round. I think I ran the same time as on the second lap – I just climbed up a bit faster.”
Newbury Park senior Colin Sahlman bested Newbury Park junior Lex Young to win the boys’ 3,200m invitation event in 8:34.99.

“It’s been a long day,” said Thai, who also ran in a morning relay. “I’m definitely happy with the way my jumps have progressed. I look forward to future meetings.”
Thai spent Sunday on an official visit to Cal State Fullerton.
“It was really fun to be able to attend the Arcadia meeting post-COVID,” Thai said. “There was so much energy. That was really exciting.”
