A Colorado grand jury issued indictments for five, including three police officers and two paramedics involved in the August 2019 death of Elijah McClain, a 23-year-old Black man who was stopped by police while walking home from a store, put in a carotid hold and then injected with ketamine, Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser announced Wednesday.
Indicted as part of a 32 count indictment, Randy Roedema and Jason Rosenblatt of the Aurora Police Department and paramedics for Aurora Fire Rescue Jeremy Cooper and Peter Cichuniec were charged with manslaughter.
Roedema, Rosenblatt, and Cooper were also indicted for one count each of assault, one count each of crime, violence, and Cichuniec on six counts each of crime, violence.
Weiser stated, “We are here today because Elijah McClain has not been here, and he should be,” He was 23 years old when he died. His entire life was ahead of him, and his family and friends must continue to live without him.
“The officers’ statements on the scene and in subsequent recorded interviews suggest a violent and relentless struggle,” the report states. “The limited video, and the audio from the body worn cameras, reveal Mr. McClain surrounded by officers, all larger than he, crying out in pain, apologizing, explaining himself, and pleading with the officers.”
